Generous Giving at CMBC

Over the last six months, a number of events have taken place in which the generosity of people has been really marked. Some of these are highlighted below...

During the summer holidays, we had BBQs at Crewkerne (July 23rd) and Misterton (September 2nd). These were great times of fun and food, but also raised between them nearly £200 for the appeal and for the young people’s work.

Who will win?!

On September 18th the church coffee morning was for the Bible Society and over £100 was raised.

The Harvest Weekend (October 1 – 3) always features the church’s commitment to the work of Tearfund, and this year the Sunday offerings and Monday Silent Auction raised £409. Thank you to all who contributed.

On November 21st the church’s annual Gift Service for the George Muller Foundation was held at Misterton Chapel. As usual, a tremendous number of items were donated and an offering raised over £140.

During the service, many people took part

At Christmas, we always donate our offerings at our special services to causes beyond the church. This year, the gifts were divided between a local Parkinson’s Group, chaired by Gerry and Val Nicholas of CMBC, and again to Tearfund, especially for its continued reconstruction work in Haiti. We raised over £400 in total for these two causes.

Return to our North Street building

The return to our North street renovated building took place during February. A host of people from the church worked very hard to make this possible, starting with a Saturday morning working party in January and then a great deal of activity in the second half of February.

The first Sunday service took place on the morning of February 27th. This was a great joy for those able to be present, and a number of people in the church took part in leading worship.

During March, further work was done to prepare for the first of out two major events to mark the return, the Open Morning on Saturday March 19th. An exhibition of the church's last hundred years was prepared, and a range of refreshments were available. It was good to greet a substantial number of people from the wider community during the morning. Comments focused particularly on the lightness and brightness, and the sense of openness and flexibility of our new space. Other people who have visited us on other occasions, Sundays or at other times, have noted the same.

Return to North Street

The second major event was the Thanksgiving Service on April 3rd. This gave Christians from other churches in the district the opportunity to join us in celebration and praise to God for the completion of work which we starting dreaming about in 2002. A very large number of churches were represented, and some people had travelled substantial distances to be with us. Refreshments were available from 4.30pm, many of them joining us for these.

Return to North Street

By 6pm, the time the service was due to start, the downstairs area of the church was almost full, and some people had to use the gallery. The service focused first on worship, led by several from the church. The history of the redevelopment was outlined by John Stuffins, who co-ordinated this work for the church (the second major project in the last few years). The preacher was Revd Jeremy (Jez) Brown, South West Baptist Association Senior Regional Minister who challenged the congregation as to whether individually they were being seen by others as living stones in their communities.

We thank everyone who took part and helped make it a special afternoon/evening.

Mothering Sunday Family Praise 2011

On the morning of April 3rd we held Family Praise for Mothering Sunday, led by our Pastor and Charles Freebury. Taking the theme of 'Happy Families?' we explored the current evidence and looked at some Biblical examples. As always at Family Praise, a number of people of different ages took part, which we thank them for.

Mothering Sunday 2011

Peter Woolway helped lead the service, which was interactive, informative and thought-provoking.

Mothering Sunday 2011

People of all ages attended the service which focused on mothers and their roles.

Christmas 2010

The Christmas period is a very busy but rewarding time of year for the Church. We had several events over the month of December, which started with our Kingfisher club Christmas party. The party included games, craft and food, and great fun was had by all who attended.

Christmas 2010

The Crewkerne carol service was held at the Crewkerne Henhayes Centre, and we were joined by a number of people from the community. People of all ages took part in the service which had traditional contemporary flavours, and concluded with sausage rolls and mince pies.

Christmas 2010

Club Rock had their Christmas outing in Yeovil, which included bowling and a trip to McDonalds. We thank Crewkerne Voluntary Transport, who drove us to and from our destinations - a novelty that added to the fun nature of the evening.

Christmas 2010

The Misterton Christmas family service was affected by the very poor weather, with a number of people unable to take part. However it was great to see those who were able to attend and still contribute to what was a very special service. Charles Freebury spoke on how the Christmas story affected the Virgin Mary, which was followed by mince pies.

Christmas 2010

On Christmas day we had our service at Misterton (because of the Crewkerne building redevelopment) which was led by John Stuffins. We thank everyone who made it such a wonderful Christmas period.

Annual gift service for the George Muller Foundation

Every year we have a gift service which is in aid of the George Muller Foundation, which works with disadvantaged people in the Bristol area. Gifts are brought to our Misterton building, and are then taken to Bristol within a short time. We had a huge amount of donations this year, and the service was on the 21st November. Revd Ruth Farrant spoke on God's greatest gift for us, which was followed by a tea. Over £150 was taken up in the collection, which went with the gifts. Thank you to all those who contributed.

Harvest 2010

Our annual harvest celebrations started on Saturday 2nd October and ran through until Monday 4th October. On the Saturday we had our harvest supper at the Misterton building, catered by members of our congregation. On Sunday morning we had our harvest thanksgiving service at the Speedwell hall in Crewkerne, in which several people took part. On Sunday afternoon we held the harvest family service at our Misterton building, which was followed by tea. Finally, the celebrations came to a close on Monday evening with the silent auction. It was great to see a variety of ages, including some from our Club Rock kid's group. Over £500 was raised in total for Tearfund, and heartfelt thanks goes to all who help make it a successful few days.
